Humbling

I was working with a junior, but very gifted and very physically strong student yesterday.  We were doing Sankyo.  There was a point in his technique during which he left an opening that I thought he was capable of addressing.  I wanted to point this out to him, so, for fun, I started to execute a reversal.

I didn't do it very well, I didn't warn him what I was doing, and I was arrogant enough to think I could pull it off at speed.  Consequently, despite the opening, his reaction was to close it REALLY FAST.  Did I mention he's really, really strong?

OUCH.  Ibuprofen and ice.  Nothing broken, methinks, but I'm still feeling it as I type this.

Lessons (re-)learned:

  1. I'm an idiot
  2. Never, ever lose respect for this stuff
